Hello, I'm Dr. Amy MacKay!
I was born and raised in the Cleveland area, the lucky daughter of Nancy and Charles. Fortunately my parents are awesome and so while we were growing up, my sister (aka my best friend Susie) and I had a dog named Henry, followed shortly thereafter by a rescue cat named Sooty. We had a procession of "S" felines after that—Sammy, Sarah, Scooter, Simon, Sylvie. I loved them all passionately, and I guess it was just instinctive for me to become a veterinarian.
After receiving my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from The Ohio State University in 1996, I was privileged to be awarded a residency in feline internal medicine at the University of Bristol in England. Under the mentorship of some amazing experts, I endeavored to learn as much as I could about cats.
Upon returning home, I was fortunate to start working at a local cat practice, gaining valuable clinical experience. But I wanted to do things my way... in particular, I wanted to be able to put the cats first, as I thought (and still think) that that is how it should be. After a few years, I was able to follow my dream and open my own practice—Nine Lives Cat Clinic. With the help of my amazing staff, we provided "quality medicine, compassionate care" for nearly 14 years. We had fantastic clients and fabulous patients... our own little, loyal, loving family. However, health issues--in particular a neuropathy which affects my arms--and other factors necessitated the closure of my clinic in 2017.
With the love and support of many (special shout-out to my partner Eric), by 2019 we had transitioned into Nine Lives Cat Center, providing wellness care, grooming, and boarding. The following four years were spent happily meeting new people and new cats, along with reconnecting with many familiar faces. It was a privilege to provide We were honored to provide many cats with
Thankfully, through a mix of determination and stubbornness, and with the love and support of many (special shout-out to my partner Eric), I was able to gradually transition the clinic into the current Nine Lives Cat Center. Our wellness appointments focus on preventive care, helping to ensure that cats will have the best quality of life possible. Our grooming services are performed with a "fear-free," low-stress approach. And our on-site boarding facility, nicknamed "Hotel Homer," is uniquely distinct, as our boarding cats receive direct veterinary supervision. We are proud to provide these tailored services to cats in the Cleveland/Akron area.
Throughout this period of change, one thing has remained constant—our resident cats. They are an integral part of Nine Lives, and we couldn't imagine the place without them! Despite the pandemic and other challenges in recent years, we are in the privileged position of being able to help even more deserving cats. Through our Apricity program, some senior felines in need are able spend the rest of their days here with us. We welcome new cats with open arms and open hearts.
Wishing all of you, and your cats, health and happiness.
